A pilot interactive graphics design system has been developed which demonstrates the feasibility and potential for designing highways using interactive graphics, and provides a basis for additional development, which will lead ultimately to a design system applicable to all stages of the design and route selection process. With the exception of interchange design (multiple alignments), the pilot system contains all major options necessary for the development of freeway design alternate studies, and preparation of the roadway portion of a preliminary estimate. Capabilities such as perspective displays (single and animated) and noise contour mapping provide the designer with tools for alternate evaluation that are presently unavailable using conventional methods. The pilot system hardware and software are briefly outlined.
