TRANSITWAY: AN INNOVATION IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

The results are presented of analysis based on actual service and cost information and provides insights in the comparative assessment of bus transitway and LRT (Light rail transit)-based systems in terms of level of service, cost efficiency, and cost effectiveness. It is noted that for the range of conditions studied, the transitway system is more cost efficient, as well as cost effective, than the LRT system in serving the travel needs of medium-size urban areas. The implementation flexibility offered by the transitway and the fact that such a system could, in the long run, be converted to an intermediate capacity or high capacity rail rapid transit system adds to its attractiveness. It is pointed out that for medium-size cities (without dense corridors), the transitway system should be seriously considered as an alternative to the LRT system.
