EXPERT SYSTEMS: READY TO HIT THE ROAD

The article discusses efforts by many departments of transportation to apply expert systems to designing, scheduling and pricing road repair. A typical system called Pavement Rehabilitation Expert System (PARES) is described. It takes information given by the user and processes it through a series of tests until the system is convinced it has determined a proper rehabilitation strategy. The system applies tests called if-then-rules. Diagnosis and suggested treatment can be quite specific, down to the number of inches of new asphalt on the old pavement. Problems associated with it are also discussed. A concrete rehabilitation system called Expert System for Pavement Evaluation and Rehabilitation (EXPEAR) is also described.
