The article describes how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is introducing guidelines that would make the Corps' databases compatible yet adaptable to different situations and projects. Work on the technical bulletin, 'Guidelines for the Preparation of Automated Map Data Bases at Army Installations is described. These Guidelines will create the Corps' first comprehensive guidelines for CAD mapping work. The guidelines set a level known as minimum essential data, that each database must maintain for a variety of topics. The data collected may be in any or all fields: topographical; planimetric; major utilities; and the area's infrastructure system. Options let users modify the depth of information collected, customizing it to their needs. The Intergraph system is described. Aspects that are valuable to any agency about to embark on a computerized mapping or GIS Program are listed.
