1992 LIGHT RAIL PLANNER'S GUIDE: A NORTH AMERICAN OVERVIEW
When Edmonton, Alberta, began modern light rail boom in North America with the opening of its new line in 1978, there were only 10 operating light rail systems in service. That number has doubled since then, and is likely to reach a total of more than 30 by the end of the century as still more cities move to economical, versatile light rail as a key component of improved mass transit. This article provides a current summary of the principal light rail projects under construction or in final planning stages in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
