Laboratory development work and field test applications indicate that significantly improved physical properties can be imparted to asphalt by mixing with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) resins in amounts of 20 percent or more by weight; this includes tensile strength, elongation and modulus. The adhesion of EVA - modified asphalt pavement is significantly better than unmodified asphalt. EVA - modified patching compositions applied under adverse conditions have exhibited performance compositions equal to conventional hot-mix asphalt applied under favorable conditions. Characteristics of EVA - modified asphalt, which also have potential as crack fillers, are described. Analysis of cost-effectiveness of this new material indicates that, if the material has a road-life twice that of current emergency patching materials, then it is at least as cost-effective as current materials, and perhaps more so.
