This paper describes the development and implementation of a program that entailed single tracking over 2,000 feet of SEPTA's most heavily travelled rapid transit line to accommodate the reconstruction of over 1,400 feet of two-track, elevated guideway including two major bridges. The single tracking is taking place over a 10-month period, and this is the first time such a heavily travelled line has been single tracked for such an extensive length of time. The paper will look at the events that led to the selection of single tracking as a means of implementing this project, and examine the pros and cons from both the operations and construction standpoints. The various stages of the project through to the actual construction are examined, and possible future applications of single tracking are reviewed.
