BRACING REQUIREMENTS OF PLANE FRAMES

The paper develops a simple approach to compute the required bracing area by using semiempirical equations based on a series of studies on the limiting strength of one- to three-story frames with rigid and semirigid connections. The approach described involves the following: compute the relative stiffness between beam and column for each story; compute the required bracing areas for which the frame can be assumed to reach the elastic stability limit; compute the horizontal load parameters; and compute the PR (partially restrained) connection parameter. For semirigid frames the type-PR connections must provide enough moment capacity to ensure that the plastic hinges can be formed.
