BORED TUNNELING FOR SINGAPORE METRO

This description of the planning, layout, and implementation of the Singapore Metro mass transit system, focuses on the 22.4 km of bored tunneling required in the central area of the city. The construction program is described, as well as the contractual arrangements. The geological conditions along the line of tunnel drives is described, and details are given of the tunneling methods and face equipment, and spoil handling methods and equipment. General conclusions drawn from the experience are set forth. It is observed that for contracts with more than two drives a minimum of two shields or TBM (tunnel boring machines) are required to guard against significant delays in any one drive impacting on the whole program. These and other observations are discussed.
