AN ASSESSMENT OF THE SKID RESISTANCE AND MACROTEXTURE OF VARIOUS PAVED ROAD SURFACINGS IN MALAYSIA

A study was undertaken by Institut Kerja Raya Malaysia (IKRAM) to assess the skid resistance and texture depth of different types of pavement surfaces used in Malaysia. Four types were investigated: (1) asphaltic concrete, (2) dense bitumen macadams, (3) surface dressings, (4) concrete pavements. When compared with the U.K. investigatory levels for different categories of sites as indicated in the U.K. Department of Transport, (8), the SRVs obtained for the four types of surfacings in Malaysia were adequate for most, if not all of the site categories listed. Results also indicated that the average texture depths for AC, DBM, surface dressed and concrete surfacings were 0.35 mm, 0.55 mm, 1.50 mm and 0.70 mm respectively.
