THE AIRPORT AS AN ACCESSIBLE FACILITY: THE USER'S VIEW. AIRPORT ACCESS FOR DISABLED AND ELDERLY PERSONS - APPENDIX C

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Workshop on Airport Access for Disabled and Elderly Persons was held in June 1990. This paper was commissioned by the workshop. The topic addressed is the state of airport design, technology, and operational logistics with regard to disabled persons. Airport accessibility issues are examined from the user's view. Key problems encountered and accessibility concerns of disabled persons are identified and illustrated with anecdotes of actual experiences of disabled persons who travel frequently for employment reasons. It is the consensus of the authors that the application of new and emerging technologies and universal design principles is more important to airport accessibility than additional research at this time. Therefore, recommendations are that a careful study should be made of airport facilities built in the last 10 years using modern accessibility standards and that a structured, design-focused, consensus conference with cross-disciplinary group and universal designers should be convened.
