Existing and new commuter systems around the continent are doing a tremendous job of moving millions of people safely and efficiently every working day. The article summarizes one of the panel discussions from the Commuter Rail: The Proven ALternative in North America (Again) conference at the 1991 Annual Meeting of the American Public Transit Association in Toronto in the fall of 1991. The two specific questions discussed by the panel group were: What are the critical elements that have made your system successful?; and, What future do you see and why do you see that future?
