POLITICS, BICKERING DELAY USE OF ASPHALT RUBBER
The burning of tires as a supplemental fuel in industrial boilers or to generate electric power has been widely discussed and is rapidly expanding through the use of proven technology that eliminates previous environmental concerns. But use of crumb rubber from scrap tires in asphalt pavement -- which has even more widespread potential -- has expanded much more slowly. This special Scrap Tire Section examines the politics and problems responsible for this delay and looks at the two most common methods of improving asphalt pavement through the addition of crumb rubber.
