STRUCTURAL SEISMIC DAMPER
This is a report of a study which investigated the energy dissipating characteristis of U-shaped mild steel strips called U elements by subjecting them to a rolling bending motion. Temperature rise during the cyclic deformation of the U elements is recorded. A prototype of a structural damper consisting of a multiplicity of U elements was constructed and tested. The installation of such dampers in structures is illustrated. The paper also proposes a qualitative model of plastic-hinge formation in the U elements to show the difference between perfectly plastic behavior and real behavior.
