PROTECTED-PASTE VOLUME OF AIR-ENTRAINED CEMENT PASTE. PART 1

The results are presented of a study which derived expressions for the protected-paste volume of air-entrained cement paste on the basis of hydraulic pressure theory. Under appropriate assumptions, the derived expressions are shown to reduce to known results for simpler geometrical arrangements of air voids. From the structure of the expressions, deductions about the effect of environmental, and air-void parameters on the frost resistance of cement paste are presented. It is shown that protected-paste volume concept, as well as the form of the derived expressions for protected-paste volume, are applicable to frost-damage mechanisms other than hydraulic pressure.
