URBAN TRANSIT GUIDES APPLICATION OF ADVANCED TRAIN CONTROL

Processor based control equipment are used safely in urban rail systems, and such use offers a guide to their introduction to railways. This article gives the background to such use, and describes the evolution of safety practices in mass transit. Safety issues with software-based control and communications (relative safety, conventional signaling, processor-based signaling, processor-based communications, software changes) are discussed. Assuring system safety, and the system safety process are also discussed.
