MAKING THE MOST OF OUR HIGHWAYS. TRANSPORTATION. SPECIAL REPORT
The solution to traffic congestion and their costs lies in building greater efficiency into existing roads, as IVHS (inteligent vehicle highway systems) are doing. IVHS refers to a broad spectrum of technologies. At its most advanced IVHS utilizes a combination of technologies and specific aims to manage and improve traffic flow. There are 5 major categories of IVHS: advanced transportation systems; advanced traveler information systems; advanced vehicle control systems; commercial vehicle operations; and advanced public transportation systems. Each of these areas are discussed in this article. Other elctronic technologies are also noted and include electronic toll collection systems, and TravTek, the IVHS project in Orlando in which drivers will be able to receive route instruction and information while driving in Orlando.
