PERMIT PROGRAMS INCREASE ON-STREET PARKING AVILABILITY IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS
Several different programs to increase the availability of parking for residents on local residential streets have been enacted in Hamilton, Ontario. Two of these involve issuance of on-street parking permits and are based on the principle of eliminating long-term nonresident parking. The reserved permit parking regulation is very restrictive and is used only in areas with severe parking problems. The most successful program has been the time limit exemption program, which eliminated long-term nonresident parking on local streets. The details of the programs are described, as well as their implementation and enforcement.
