METHODS OF REDUCING WEAR ON THE ROLLER BEARINGS OF WAGON AXLE BOXES AS CAUSED BY TRACTION CURRENT

The article examines the causes of wear by electric erosion occurring in the roller bearings of axle-boxes, and provides recommendations framed for the protection of bearings against damage caused by traction current. By equipping the electric locomotives with contact devices for evacuating the traction current in the rails, through the axle-boxes, the number of roller-bearings damaged through electric erosion is reduced by some 15%. This damage can be reduced by introducing, in the earthing circuit, an additional resistance between bogie-underframe and axles-boxes, themselves isolated from the underframe. The total resistance of the earthing circuit of a wagon must be roughly 0.0625 ohms.
