LIFE IN THE FAST TRACK
The article describes how, through innovative financing and skillful construction management, Oklahoma is proving that transportation magaprojects are possible, even during an economic downturn. In one of the most complex transportation projects in state history, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) and its consultant were able to coordinate more than 100 design firms and construction contracts and deliver four turnpikes ahead of schedule and under the budget. The key to the project was sound financial management and a team approach that enabled completion of construction $10 million under budget and four months early. The background to the project is described. The article describes how the team was assembled, and the project was broken down into multiple parts to allow the maximum amount of funds to be expended in Oklahoma.
