HIGH-TECH TRAFFIC CONTROL HELPS EASE CONGESTION
Ways in which traffic congestion may be controlled must involve ways to maximize use of existing highways and roadway networks. High-tech solutions including Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) are being developed, tested and implemented. IVHS concepts fall into 4 categories: advanced traveler information systems; advanced traffic management systems; advanced vehicle control systems; and fleet management and control systems. New technologies within each of these areas maximize the use of existing transportation infrastructure and energy resources while also improving safety. Each of these areas are discussed in the article. New Jersey's first IVHS system being developed on Interstate 80 is also described.
