SHAKEDOWN LIMIT STATE OF COMPACT STEEL GIRDER BRIDGES

Work is reported that developed analytical models to evaulate slab-on-compact steel girder bridges for the shakedown limit state. The result was limit of the entire bridge system for a maximum shakedown capacity. The details of the study are described. The models described were successful in analyzing a complex load-resisting system subjected to variable repeated loads. The models determined the inelastic limit states and tracked the inelastic system behavior up to the collapse condition. The shakedown limit state of the bridge system showed significant additional capacity over the guide spec first-hinge limit state. It is noted that using the shakedown limit as an utlimate limit state seems reasonable given the nature of bridge loadings and when observing the incremental collapse behavior at 1% over the shakedown limit load.
