KETTLEMAN HILLS WASTE LANDFILL SLOPE FAILURE I: LINER-SYSTEM PROPERTIES. DISCUSSION

This is a discussion of a paper of the above title by J.K. Mitchell, R.B. Seed and H. Bolton published in April 1990 Vol. 116, No 4 of this Journal. The discussers comment on the authors statement that there was considerable variation in the measured residual friction angle for the high density polyethylene liner/HDPE interface. The discussers quote their research in the same area, and point out that significant reduction in the friction angle of HDPE liners due to even a trace of lubrication has important implications in engineering practice using geomembranes. The discussion is followed by a closure by the authors.
