Used since 1984, it is described how exodermic bridge decks are being constructed in New York and New Jersey. The design combines two time-tested materials, concrete in compression and steel in tension, in a totally new way: bonding a thin layer of reinforced concrete to the top of an unfilled steel grid forms a 2-way composite structure. It is lighter, stronger, may be manufactured, and because of its design innovations, has greatly improved stress, fatigue, and wear-life characteristics. This article summarizes details of its design and installation.
