GEOMETRIC DESIGN AND TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES: CAN I PROVOKE YOU?

It is noted that new software packages, no matter what areas they cover, seldom provide final solutions or best alternatives to specific design and operational problems. It is necessary that practitioners realize that modern technolgoy in traffic engineering cannot stand alone, and will generally fail to provide optimum solutions. Standards for geometric design and the application traffic control devices is discussed. The article discusses how streets and highways must be constructed to provide traffic control devices applied in a manner that will most effectively allow the roadway to communicate with the motorist.
