This is a discussion of paper of the above title by T.S. Nagaraj, B.R.S. Murthy, A. Vatsala, and R.C. Joshi published in January 1990 Vol 116 No 1 of this journal. Discusser Leroueil notes that disturbance is not the only factor that could make a difference between yield stresses in the laboratory and in situ. Such factors are listed and discussed. Discusser McManis notes that sensitivity to sampling disturbances can occur in some soils due to factors other than the flocculated-cemented structure. The discusser's experience with such clays is discussed. Differences between the soils described by the discusser and those described by the authors are noted.
