DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF SAND REINFORCED WITH RANDOMLY DISTRIBUTED FIBERS. DISCUSSION

This is a discussion of a paper of the above title by M.H. Maher and R.D. Woods published in Vol. 116, No. 7, in July 1990. The discusser comments on the authors' finding that randomly distributed fibers and fibers oriented perpendicular to the shear plane have the same effect on both shear modulus and damping of the composite material, provided the fiber content is the same in both cases. The discussers also present unpublished experimental results obtained of resonant column tests on dry Ottawa Sand reinforced with fibers oriented normally to the plane of shear. Conclusions drawn from the results are also presented.
