SETTLEMENTS OF SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS ON COHESIONLESS SOILS
The main objective of this study was to quantify the influence of certain basic factors on the settlement of cohesionless soils. This paper presents a method to estimate settlements on cohesionless soils. The method includes a simplified model for the distribution of applied stress and incorporates certain experimental conclusions for the stress-strain relation, supported by an extensive laboratory investigation of various types of cohesionless soils. The conclusions drawn from the study are presented. It is noted that the final expressions for the estimation of settlements have the form of the elastic-type solutions, and they are in effect nonlinear functions of the foundation width and the applied loading.
