DEVELOPMENT OF A STATEWIDE DUI STATISTICAL TRACKING SYSTEM
This paper describes the development and preliminary results of a system for monitoring the performance of California enforcement and control activities relating to impaired drivers. Titled CALDOTS (California Drinking Offender Tracking System), this system tracks DUIs from point of arrest through the courts and into DMV files. Subsequent accident and reoffense rates are monitored and correlated with type of court sanction and driver control action. Variations in DUI conviction rates and plea reduction rates are reported by county and court. Legislative authority for the system was established through enactment of AB 757 (Friedman, 1989 legislative session).
