A hands-on guide is offered to driver safety around the rig which provides accident prevention measures not typically considered in most truck driver training courses. Coaching drivers in these areas will help keep them from painful injuries and diminish insurance premium claims. Tips are given on the proper way to get in and out of the cab, as well as other rules such as never carrying packages when boarding or deboarding. Another area addressed is how the driver gets into the truck body or trailer. To give drivers a better way to climb up and down any type of trailer, including those with swinging doors, improved ladder-and-handle arrangements are being installed in some fleets. The installation of a 'safety step' is also discussed. Driver back injuries in connection with loading and unloading freight is also discussed. Other key areas to be addressed in driver industrial safety programs are also noted.
