EVALUATION OF MULTI-PURPOSE INDUSTRIAL-PORT ISLANDS: SEA ISLAND STRUCTURE ENGINEERING RESEARCH STUDY

A research program was initiated by the National Science Foundation's Research Applied to National Needs Program to evaluate the economic, engineering, legal and environmental feasibility of artificial, manmade industrial/port islands located off the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. The Civil Engineering considerations of the study included an examination of site selection factors, and construction technology. The study concluded that a manmade multi-purpose offshore industrial port/island is technically feasible to construct ten to eleven nautical miles off either the New Jersey or Virginia coasts.
