WEIGHT AND DIMENSION REGULATIONS AND INTERNATIONAL TRUCKING IN THE NORDIC REGION. IDEAS FOR CHANGE

The research preceding this report was directed at the development of proposals for desirable changes in weight and dimension regulations governing trucks that operate internationally in the Nordic region. The report presents an overview of the subject of weights and dimensions - what they are, their purpose, reasons for differences and worldwide trends. Key physical and operational aspects and characteristics of the Nordic region international truck transport system are described. The Nordic region's current and proposed regulations in relation to each other and the EC regulations are compared and the issue and role of the "modulization" of freight and its inter-dependencies with truck weights and dimensions are examined. The report includes an illustration and evaluation of the effects of current and proposed Nordic regulations on truck characteristics and presents observations on the current and proposed regulations and suggestions for change.
