THREE-DIMENSIONAL SMALL-SCALE MODEL STUDY OF THE FAILURE OF REINFORCED EARTH STRUCTURES

ETUDE SUR MODELES REDUITS TRIDIMENSIONNELS DE LA RUPTURE DE MASSIFS EN TERRE ARMEE

After mentioning the conditions of similarity, with which the small-scale model has to comply, the authors describe some of the tests they carried out to investigate the failure of a non-cohesive structure supported by a membrane, according to the reinforced earth technique. The tests began on reinforced earth models 0,30 M wide and were continued on models 1M wide. Results showed that there exists a critical length of the reinforcement, beyond which the failure of the reinforced earth mass is due to the failure of the reinforcement and not to insufficient adhesion with the embankment. For a given reinforcement system, the embankment height, which causes failure, is proportional to the length and the tensile strength of the reinforcement. /TRRL/
