THIN SMA SURFACINGS - ROCKVILLE'S SMOOTH SEAL PROGRAM

Street maintenance in Rockville, Maryland is described, in which smooth seal is used. The latter is a thin Hot Mix Asphalt surfacing placed with the usual paving equipment. The average thickness is 5/8'', with the target yield of 60 lbs per sq yard on secondary roads and 70 lbs per sq yard on primary streets. Street maintenance is effected with this thin layer with minimal effect on the gutter pans. The details are described of the operation including the scheduling, inspection, and costs. The seal has a projected life of ten years, so that its econoic advantages are obvious.
