The use of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) in Europe is noted, and its use in the United States is described. Also known as Stone Mastic Asphalt, SMA is essentially a gap graded heavy duty paving mixture which includes a high dust and asphalt cement content and a stabilizer. The mix has proven performance in Europe for over 15 years under much heavier traffic/tire weight limits than are found in most of the U.S. The article compares SMA with conventional U.S. HMA, and describes the materials and mix design, as well as production. It also describes four case studies in which SMA was produced and placed in Wisconsin, Georgia, Michigan, and Missouri. In all projects, the mineral filler was added to increase the amount of minus 200 material to approximately 10% in all mixes. Early compaction is stressed, and rollers were encouraged to compact as close to the paver as possible. To date, all mixes are performing satisfactorily.
