SCRAP TIRES PAVE ROADS
It is described how in Oregon, scrap tires were used on a 15.6 mile asphalt rubber hot mix overlay project in Jackson County. The public works department requred that Oregon scrap tires be used, and that those tires come from Jackson County. Since such tires are health and fire hazards, most states outlaw their disposal in landfills. To avoid, that the State of Oregon is making sure that local asphalt rubber projects use the scrap tires. The Jackson Couty project was the first major asphalt rubber test project. A three- mile conventional asphalt pavement control section will be added to each end of the project, and the pavement maintenance system will keep track of cracking, rutting and other defects to monitor pavement performance.
