SMART SPEC'ING: ON-BOARD RECORDERS. EXTRA EYES ON THE ROAD

Electronic devices are described that record almost anything that happens in a truck: road speed, engine rpm, idling time, fuel consumption, oil pressure, and coolant temperature, as well as other data such as the number of brake applications, reefer temperatures, and when the trailer doors were opened. These devices can be used by the trucking industry to support a fair system of cash bonuses to reward good driver performance. The article describes how a trip recorder works, and how they should selected. Products are available for a variety of objectives such as improving fuel ecnonomy, reducing speed, reducing accidents, reducing dawdling at truckstops, etc. Aspects that should be considered when purchasing a trip recorder are discussed.
