VARIABLE PRESTRESS FORCE IN UNBONDED POST-TENSIONED MEMBERS

The article describes how PTDATA PLUS, a computer program developed for designing and analyzing post-tensioned concrete members with variable prestress force, was used to compare typical post-tensioned concrete beams and slabs designed with constant and variable prestress forces. The theory on which the study is based is described. A 3-span post tensioned beam was selected to evaluate the effects of variable tendon force. Details of the comprative study are detailed. Concrete bending stresses and reinforcing steel requirements are discussed. The study findings provide insight on the general impact that a variable force design method will have. Impacts on structural behavior, analysis, and design are discussed.
