RESEARCH, APPLICATION, AND EXPERIENCE WITH PRECAST PRESTRESSED BRIDGE DECK PANELS

This state-of-the-art report on precast prestressed concrete deck panels presents a summary of recent research, a discussion of the design, manufacture and installation of these panels, and a report on past experiences with precast panels. Several design recommendations, derived from recent testing programs in Texas, Pennsylvania and Florida, are suggested. First, butt joints should be used. Secondly, the strands in the panels should be placed at the centerline of the panels and spaced uniformly across the width. This reduces stress concentrations which could cause cracking and eliminates any camber which could lead to thin slabs. Finally, reinforcing ties are not necessary.
