TUNNELING DEEP UNDER URBAN KANSAS CITY

This article relates the story of Kansas City, Missouri's Trans-Missouri River Tunnel. The city's original Missouri Valley Tunnel, after almost 70 years of service, has become structurally ed and impossible to drain for inspection. A A bond issue to finance a new tunnel was proposed by the city council, and approved by voters in March 1988. Includes a discussion of the tunnel's planning and design (prequalifying contractors; escrow bid documents; geotechnical baseline; safety features), and the tunnel construction plans. The final completion date is expected to be May 1993.
