DAMS GOING SAFELY OVER THE TOP

It is described how cellular concrete mats that have long protected vulnerable coastlines from soil erosion, can, when combined with basic geotechnical remedial measures, offer an alternative to expensive upgrades of older, outdated dams. Cost effective modification of dams by covering the downstream slope of the embankment with cellular concrete mats, prevent erosion during overtopping floods. Cellular concrete mats (CCM) are prefabricated mats of precast cellular concrete blocks tied together by cables and anchored in place. The blocks are typically 4-09 in. thick and 1-2 ft square, with openings or cells. The details of these CCMs are described, as well as design details of their use in 3 dams on Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Lessons learned in the actual construction are listed and discussed.
