The areas of uncertainty which face engineers designing major projects, and the use of risk analysis in the design of engineered facilites exposed to natural hazards are discussed. These include the estimation of the seismic hazards, and the potiential effects of decades of ocean currents on offshore structures. Risk analysis, emergency plans, seismic rehabilitation plans or hazard-specific screening methods are discussesd, as well as loss analysis. The evaluation of offshore platforms using probabilistic reliability analysis is also discussed.
