The article describes how the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's implementation of new trenching guidelines, became the incentive for the development of an innovative, state-of-the-art excavation system in the construction of the University of Tennessee's engineering campus buildings. The stringent trenching procedures set forth by the OSHA are listed. While these regulations upgrade the level of safety in excavation, they also increase cost. The latter has been overcome in a new trenching technology that combines compaction piles and soil nailing. The design and various excavation issues encountered are discussed.
