VISCOPLASTIC RESPONSE OF CLAMPED BEAMS UNDER IMPACT LOADING

This study re-examines the behavior of a fully clamped beam subjected to a central impact loading, and develops a rigid-viscoplastic theoretical analysis for the title problem which consists of three stages. The first stage, in which a traveling plastic hinge moves from the midpoint to the support, is handled in a way similar to the simple-beam analysis, except that both bending moment and axial force are considered herein. The second and third stages are governed by the dissipation of kinetic energy in the system. The finite element program, ABAQUS, is considered, and a detailed 3-dimensional time history of a typical ABAQUS run is presented to assess the reasonableness of some of the simplifying assumptions made in the various analytical models.
