This paper discusses recent developments in QXRD (quantitative X-ray diffraction) analysis and summarizes efforts within ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) to develop a standard test method for QXRD analysis of portland cement clinker. It is noted that although many difficulties are encountered in the quantitative phases analysis of cement and clinker by XRD, the method is shown to provide accurate analysis. The recent use of calculated XRD patterns may facilitate QXRD analysis of cement and clinker phases in the future. Progress is being made within ASTM towards a standard test methd for QXRD analysis of clinker phases. This work, however, is still in progress and present conclusions are only preliminary.
