HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF FUMES FROM ASPHALT PAVING. IN: 1991 TAC ANNUAL CONFERENCE, PROCEEDINGS. VOLUME 1. SEPTEMBER 15-16, 1991, WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA

CONGRES ANNUEL 1991 DE L'ATC, COMPTE RENDU, VOLUME 1. SEPTEMBRE 15-16, 1991, WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA

Concerns about the health hazards of asphalt fumes have initiated a number of activities in the asphalt industry in the U.S. and in Europe. This study discusses the chemical nature of asphalt fumes and their concentrations at various work sites in asphalt paving operations. Asphalt and its fumes are compared chemically with coal tar and coal tar pitch, which are known carcinogens. Examination of asphalt and asphalt fumes under WHMIS classification criteria indicates that in air, asphalt fumes are neither toxic nor very toxic, but the condensate of asphalt fumes may be toxic, depending on the temperature of heating.
