Central Laboratories in Wellington, New Zealand, has been involved with structural testing for the past 20 years. In this paper, current research projects are described. Projects include work on the repair techniques for plastic hinge zones in bridge piers, affected by seismic events. The first technique involved the use of epoxy resin injection for minor crack damage in the hinge region. The second utilised a sand/cement grout repair for cover concrete damage while the third also used a sand/cement grout combined with salvage stable pieces of concrete which were placed in the core. In the third case sections of buckled main steel were replaced with new bar butt welded into position and broken transverse steel was replaced. All repaired piers performed satisfactorily under further cyclic load reversals, achieving peak loads higher than the theoretical ultimate values and ductilities in accordance with the intent of the New Zealand loadings code.
