ANALYSING DEMAND FOR RAIL TRAVEL

Compared with the vast literature available on road traffic forecasting, the number of publications on the demand for rail travel is very limited. Although road remains the dominant transport mode, passenger rail retains a significant share of demand in specific markets and to significant groups of people. Rail is also seen as a mode of transport that will become increasingly important in the future, as congestion and environmental concerns increasingly constrain the growth of both car and air transport. This book fills the gap in available literature on the analysis of the demand for rail travel. The exposition of the methodology is supplemented by references to empirical studies, and particularly to work undertaken at the Institute for Transport Studies of the University of Leeds. In addition to its specific focus on the demand for rail travel, the book's clear descriptions of a wide range of demand analysis methods will make it a useful reference for all those involved with analyzing demand for other modes of transport.
