The paper discusses the environmental impact of roads, particularly long and short term effects of air pollution carried by motor vehicle traffic. Vehicle speeds and principal polluting agents are analysed, and vehicle types are taken into consideration. Suggestions for improvement of air quality along motorways include vehicle emission control, geometric design, roadside plantings and forest belts.
