A SYSTEMATIC ROAD SAFETY PROGRAMME IN MALAYSIA. PROCEEDINGS, SIXTH CONFERENCE, ROAD ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION OF ASIA AND AUSTRALASIA, 4-10 MARCH 1990, KUALA LUMPUR, VOLUMES 1 TO 5 AND POST CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

Accident costs exert a considerable drain on the national budget. Some countries in this region rank quite high in terms of fatalities per 10,000 vehicles. High accident rates are a cause of concern. The Road Safety Council of Malaysia has reorganised itself recently to tackle this problem in a more systematic manner. Various progress has since been made towards this end. New efforts and programmes of Road Safety Council have been undertaken. Identification of blackspots has been carried out and detailed studies of these blackspots have since been done and are being carried out. Other factors that contribute to road accidents, like drivers' and road-users' behaviour are also being considered and studied. One of the significant steps taken by the Road Safety Council is the implementation of a new accident recording form for the police. This form is more systematic and is coded for input into the computer for analyses. The form gathers more information than before which can be used by the relevant authorities related to road safety.
